Stephen’s Defense

In Acts 7 Stephen had been put on trial for his faith. Those against him put forth false witnesses to accuse him of speaking against the Temple. But Stephen didn’t really use his trial as a time to vindicate himself. Instead, seizing the opportunity he preached to them about God’s work of redemption, culminating in Jesus Christ.

We should note Stephen’s approach. Since he was addressing the religious leaders of the day, he started with a retelling of God’s redemptive work throughout Israel’s history beginning with Abraham. Stephen told how God led His people, but they continually rebelled against Him and His appointed leaders.

Stephen then criticized Israel for ignoring the call to repentance from the prophets and not seeing that God could not be contained in Temples built by human hands. He concluded with a word of condemnation for their treatment of Jesus:

“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it.” (Acts 7:51-53)

The religious leaders became enraged and ordered for Stephen to be stoned. But Stephen showed his Christlikeness as he prayed for his attackers: “Lord do not charge them with this sin.” Could we have been so forgiving? Could we have been so bold? Or are we more like the stiff-necked ones who received God’s Word but refused to obey it? What do you have to say in your defense?

 North Texas Food Bank

There is a need for nearly 300,000 nutritious meals a day to feed hungry people in North Texas, equal to three sold-out Cotton Bowls every day of the year.  The North Texas Food Bank is hard at work attempting to fill that need.  North Texas is your community.  The Baptist General Convention of Texas, through the Daily Bread Initiative, wants to keep your church informed on ways your church can play a part in meeting this overwhelming local need through the services of the NTFB.  Because the NTFB can provide food for 14 to 28 cents a pound to your local member food pantries, it is a much more efficient way to get food to the hungry than a church food drive where church members buy food on their own at the local grocery store.  NTFB's newly-created Virtual Food Drive is an easy, fun and effective way to get the most food to the most people.  After reviewing the information below, would you consider putting this link in an email to your congregation and/or on your website, giving your church members the chance to participate in reducing hunger in your own neighborhood?  Thank you for all you do in ministry to hungry people in North Texas in Jesus' name.
